Requirements

Steno needs iPhone running iOS 26 or later. Recording and transcription work on any iPhone that supports iOS 26.

Summaries, action items, and suggested next steps need Apple Intelligence, which is available on iPhone 15 Pro and later. On other iPhones you still get recordings and full transcripts; the summary section simply does not appear.

Why don't I see a summary?

Open the note and look where the summary would be. Steno says which of these applies rather than leaving the space empty:

• Apple Intelligence is off. Turn it on in iOS Settings, under Apple Intelligence & Siri, then reopen the note.
• The model is still downloading. The first time Apple Intelligence is enabled, iOS fetches the model in the background. This one does clear on its own; try again a little later.
• Your iPhone doesn't support it. See below.

You can also re-run a summary at any time from the note's ⋯ menu.

What if my iPhone can't run Apple Intelligence?

Steno stays useful. Recording, live transcription, saving, search, date navigation, renaming, PDF and text export, and all 45 transcription languages work on any iPhone running iOS 26. The only thing you lose is the automatic summary, along with the action items and suggested next steps derived from it.

Notes on such a device show a short line where the summary would be, explaining that this iPhone cannot produce one. Nothing silently fails, and nothing you record is lost.

If you later move to an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence, open any older note and summarize it from the ⋯ menu. The transcript is still there, so nothing recorded earlier is wasted.

Transcription languages

Steno transcribes in every language iOS supports for speech recognition, currently several dozen. Choose one in Settings, under Transcription language. Languages already installed on your iPhone are listed under Ready to use; the others download the first time you pick them.

Leaving it on Match device language follows your iPhone's own language setting.

Will I lose a recording if I'm interrupted?

No. Steno saves as it goes. If a call arrives, or the app is closed mid-sentence, whatever had been said up to that point is kept and appears as a note the next time you open the app.

Fixing the transcript

Transcription is very good, not perfect. Names and numbers are the usual culprits. Open a note, tap Edit beside Transcript, and correct it. Steno then offers to regenerate the summary from your corrected text.

Action items and next steps can be edited, added, or deleted directly. Anything you wrote yourself is preserved when the summary is regenerated.

Exporting and sharing

From a note's ⋯ menu you can export a PDF, share as plain text, or send it to any app in the iOS share sheet. Suggested next steps open your own Mail, Calendar, or Reminders app with the details filled in, so you review and send them yourself.

Where are my recordings stored?

On your iPhone, in the app's private storage. Nothing is uploaded and there is no account. See the privacy policy for details.

Because there is no cloud copy, deleting the app deletes your notes. Export anything you want to keep first.
